If you'll recall, Aylia's original suspicions about her mentor involved him being a merman -- understandably, given her experiences with Carolynn and Stefanee.  (And Jocelyn, of course.)  The way he's acted with her so far is quite outwardly consistent with the way she's seen mermaids act.  He doesn't think the same way most mermaids do, but that's not easy to tell unless you've actually talked to him about the way he does think; Aylia's not the first person to accuse him of acting like one.
