Don't you love it when characters leap to logical conclusions, even when they're wrong?  (Grin.)  Because Aylia has no information about this teacher except that a) the administrator finds him intimidating, and b) he's playing some kind of weird game that seems designed to irritate, of course the first thing she would think is, "Oh, no.  Mermaid.  Please don't be a mermaid."  The funny thing is, it would no longer occur to her to think of a dragon as intimidating, because she now knows several of them!
