The person Aylia's talking to in this strip is a random faculty member.  Her mentor's "riddle" is kind of a treasure hunt, sending her from point to point until she finally reaches her destination.  Naturally, this is both unnecessary and rather aggravating.  Still, it does serve a valid purpose from her mentor's twisted way of thinking: he wants to test how good she is at thinking her way through things, and he's also interested in how she reacts under pressure, particularly when it seems complicated and unnecessary.
