Reg does become a police detective, though he does take several in-the-meantime jobs before he gets made a rookie. He doesn't precisely bother to keep his lycanthropy secret from his fellow police, which means he's able to prove the usefulness of his wolf nose immediately, and gets promoted quickly. This does not escape notice, and it isn't long before dozens of police officers and hundreds of criminals are taking long trips around the borders of Lycanth, trying to find born werewolf deserters to bite them.
Within two years, every grocery store or first aid kit holds wolfsbane, and two pharmaceutical companies have developed expensive vaccines. Within four years, every born werewolf in over twenty countries is required to take a shot every year to make their bites non-contagious. Within ten years, Lycanth is sending out fugitive-hunters to drag all born werewolves back across the border, and many families -- including Felincia's -- get hassled a lot until there are finally legal protections in place for well-behaving citizens of other countries. The "werewolf epidemic" spreads like wildfire, and Reg feels a little bit guilty about it -- but he's also philosophical about the situation. He figures there was no way it could have been prevented, once the two worlds had become so aware of each other. |
