Richard and Tilia spend a wonderful six years traveling around the world, socializing with common people and discovering all the little joys of life they had been missing out on while in charge of a whole kingdom. They start visiting Albert every year on his birthday, once he breaks the habit of grabbing their legs and beseeching them to come back and rule the kingdom again. After they get their fill of their very long vacation, they decide to stay with Cecelia for awhile, so they can get to understand her new lifestyle and species.
Gavin enjoys their presence, and they love having him around too, and they are tickled pink when he starts speaking in really long, academic-sounding sentences . . . despite still looking like a toddler. While perfectly normal for sixteen-year-old dragons, this seems hilariously strange to his human grandparents. They help him study dragon shapeshifting magic, and when he finally figures out how to make himself look human, they applaud right beside Cecelia. Of course, there's very little practical application to this new achievement, but he thinks it's funny -- especially since he still doesn't get why Cecelia likes going around in human form so much, even though she keeps trying to explain it to him. Tilia and Richard are sad they never live to see any blood-grandchildren from Cecelia, but they're still content with three human grandchildren Jenny and Albert already, plus adopted-baby Gavin from Cecelia, as this is plenty. Richard even becomes a more active participant in his great-nieces and great-nephew's lives than his brother, since Joralan doesn't really care about his own grandchildren, and Aylia likes her Uncle Richard much better anyway. |
