The first time Alassa caught her husband cheating, she turned him into a rabbit. The second time, a fox. The third, a turtle. He still didn't get the message. He was not very intelligent.
At last, she got the brilliant idea of smashing one of his mirrors every time she caught him eyeing another girl. That finally broke through to him. He sulkily quit it. Alassa spends the majority of her time social climbing out in Andra, spending so much time on it that she can't be bothered to pay much attention to her sister anymore. She finds three or four rivals just as horrible as she is, and she's extremely pleased about having beaten Aylia so thoroughly -- she married a prince, you see, while Aylia took forever and then landed a mere teacher. In later years, Alassa has a daughter that she sometimes pays attention to and Perran mostly ignores. Alassa's daughter becomes secretive best friends with her girl-cousin in Umbria, to Aylia's amusement and Alassa's rage. Aylia gleefully teaches the girl transportation magic and encourages her to take off whenever her mother's being unreasonable, which happens on a regular basis. The three often get together to go library-book-shopping. |
