So, remember Loretta's birthday present that Elan and Kurthan gave her?  The summonable sword that made Linnea rather nervous?  Well, of course she's been abusing that sword's power, since she doesn't always think these things through, and she's gleeful that her mother can't confiscate it permanently.  Unfortunately, it apparently didn't occur to her that her sword's not invulnerable.  Sometimes it's just not wise to flaunt your ability to break authority figures' rules!
