Dron is really quite an astounding person, and -- no matter what he claims -- all his achievements are not mere side effects of luck, or age.  One of the major reasons he keeps sticking around humans is that the dragon community respects him way too much for his comfort, because his peers understand exactly how amazing he is.  In his youth, Dron was ridiculously full of himself, and he now hates arrogance with fiery passion.  He acts the way he does now out of humility.
