As mentioned in the description of Strip #1,047, Elan's mother used to be an assassin-for-hire, just as Kurthan was once a mercenary.  Neither of them have worked in those professions since Elan's mother died, but Elan was still raised by people with a flexible attitude towards loyalty: "it belongs to whoever's paying me."  And then they spent several years wandering around the world before they happened into Umbria and Kurthan got offered a permanent job, so she doesn't feel attached to that much.
